There is a new dawn in the day of leadership.
In order to prevail in business (and life) its vital that we embrace the new approach as individuals and as a culture.
There are two types of leaders:
Type 1:
Those who operate from what I call the Push Mentality, creating outcomes through sheer bloody will. This old school way has created successes but it is overly authoritarian and has come at a cost to humanity, our health and the environment. Wars, stress, turning people into units of production instead of worthy contributors…the tyranny goes on and on.
Did you know that statistically, most employees don’t quit because they hate their jobs? They quit because they hate their bosses.
80 percent of employees say U.S. companies need to do more to develop empathy and emotional intelligence internally, yet only 57 percent of CEOs believe that empathy and what they consider to be soft skills are critical to organizational success.* This kind of thinking is an expensive Push Mentality symptom.
Perhaps you are a solo-preneur and you think, “That’s not my problem.” But consider this…
Today’s customers and clients are looking for a new kind of relationship with who they do business. They are demanding a more ethical, empathetic and socially conscious approach. If you want to gain a competitive edge in today’s marketplace, you must be able to intuit your customers’ needs oftentimes before they even know it themselves.
Additionally, creating results through effort and grind eventually leads to feeling burnt out and bummed out. One-third of entrepreneurs suffer from depression** And the biggest killer worldwide among executives, accounting for over 60% of deaths, is heart attacks.***
If this isn’t enough to change the paradigm, studies also show that Push Mentality leaders typically feel isolated, experience high levels of stress and jeopardize their relationships with their family, their body and their wellbeing. If you don’t give up the need for control you will always be a slave to your business.
Whether you are an entrepreneur or an executive, if you suspect this is you, then it’s time to embrace Type 2.
Type 2:
The new breed of leaders recognizes that they must lead themselves first in order to empower their teams, their customers, their loved ones… They are wise and instinctual.
These people learn how to:
- disarm the influence of past traumas
- integrate internal conflicts
- stay out of unnecessary drama
- govern their own emotional, physical and spiritual states
- ensure their results are sustainable and their life is fulfilling
Whether you are leading yourself or an entire workforce, a more enlightened approach to rainmaking is being called forth in this disruptive and accelerating world. This is the art of self-governance.
